Soda Bread

This soda bread uses baking soda and buttermilk (made with vinegar) to make the dough rise. Its perfect if you have no baking powder or yeast on hand.

250g plain white flour
250g wholemeal flour
100g Oats + 1 tbsp extra oats for the top
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
25g melted butter
470ml milk
3 tbsp DYC white vinegar

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.

Pour the milk into a jug, add the DYC white vinegar and stir. Set aside for 10 minutes to make the butter milk.

In a large bowl all the dry ingredients.

Pour the Milk and melted butter into the dry ingredients.

Use a table knife to bring the dough together. Gently use your hands to form a round shaped loaf.

Dust a large baking tray with flour.

Place the dough onto the baking tray.

Using a knife, score a cross on the top of the loaf.

Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes.

Check the loaf is cooked by tapping on the bottom of the loaf. If it sounds hollow the loaf is ready.
